Hijama questions, answered
The questions we are actually asked, in one place. Everything here is the same answer we give on the phone and in the room.
The basics
What is hijama?
Hijama is cupping as practised in the prophetic tradition. Dry cupping uses suction alone; wet cupping adds very superficial points. It is a traditional wellness and spiritual practice, not a medical treatment.
How does wet cupping differ from dry cupping?
Dry cupping uses suction only. Wet cupping adds small, very superficial points. Session lengths are the same for both — an hour and a half for men, two hours for women.
Is hijama part of the Sunnah?
Yes. Cupping is part of the prophetic tradition; in authentic narrations (Bukhari and Muslim) the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم described it among the best of remedies.
Did the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself receive cupping?
Yes. Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah was treated with cupping by Abu Taybah (Sahih al-Bukhari 5263, Sahih Muslim 2952).
Your session
Where can I have hijama in Fairfax, VA?
At the HAWA Fairfax Community Center, Room 401a on the fourth floor, 4401 Fair Lakes Ct, Fairfax, VA 22033. There is free parking on site. We see clients by appointment only, so please book a time rather than calling in.
How long does a hijama session take?
An hour and a half for men and two hours for women, for both wet and dry cupping. Appointments are unhurried, so the time is yours.
Is hijama hygienic?
We use single-use, sterile cups and blades for every client and follow careful hygiene practices throughout. Both practitioners hold a Certified Hijama Practitioner diploma from Hijama Nation Academy and a Professional Wellness Alliance credential.
How should I prepare?
Come well hydrated and avoid a heavy meal in the two to three hours before your session. Wear loose, comfortable clothing; we provide everything else.
How often do people have hijama?
In the traditional practice, many people return every three to four months. It is a personal choice, and we are glad to talk it through with you.
For sisters
Will a woman perform my hijama?
Yes. Your session is performed by Namira, our certified female practitioner, in a private, sisters-only setting so you can feel completely at ease.
Is the treatment private and modest?
Yes. You are seen in a private room, your hijab and modesty are respected throughout, and only the area being treated is uncovered.
Does hijama hurt?
Most women find it relaxing. You will feel a firm pulling sensation from the suction; in wet cupping the small points are very superficial. Mild soreness afterwards is normal.
Can I have hijama during pregnancy?
We do not perform wet cupping during pregnancy. Please consult your physician first; we would be glad to welcome you after your recovery.
Can I have hijama during my period?
We will help you schedule your appointment around your cycle — just let us know when you book.
What about after childbirth?
Many sisters choose hijama once they have recovered, commonly after about forty days. We will guide you gently on timing.
